Here are some tweaks to cure this device from its weaknesses:

  • Bypass Power Rail with :
    4.7µF MKP 400V
    10µF Elna Starget 35V
    470µF Elna Starget 35V
    1000µF Elna Starget 35V
    make this twice (one for 0V – 36V, one fore -36V – 0V ; beware of polarity when using chemicals!!).
  • Change the four BC327-25 for medium power audio transitors BC640.
  • Change 1N4007 rectifiers for BYW 98-200 ultra fast recovery diods (bypass each diod with ‘104′ ceramic capacitors).
  • Add a simple ’snubber’ on the power input accros the transformer’s secondary (use a 1KV ‘103′ cap).
  • Change all caps for better ones (went to ELNA Starget and Panasonic FC caps — don’t forget to remove all plastic caps) + blu-tac.
  • Bypass all red caps with 390pF MKS polystyrene caps.
  • Go from stock ECC88 to at least TFK PCC88, or even E288CC (siemens or TFK) (they just sound gorgeous on my system) – do not hesitate to tube roll for finding your favorite one !
  • Remove the red power led (if you don’t like power waste and noise).
